“Can’t lose what you never had: Claims about digital ownership and creation in the age of generative AI | Federal Trade Commission”

Companies deceptively selling such content to consumers are violating the FTC Act. This conduct obviously injures artists and writers, too

“No, streaming is not more expensive than cable TV”

This comparison was always bogus, not just because the cable prices were whack, but also because they’re implicitly comparing premium ad-free streaming to ad-supported basic cable

“Microsoft pulls AI-written article telling tourists to visit the Ottawa Food Bank - The Verge”

“aria-haspopup and screen readers - Manuel Matuzović”

I would love to read a financially-literate article that digs into how much of the streamer industry’s losses are because of bullshit like content write-downs, multi-million dollar “AI” teams, and obvious incompetence like mega-budget shows or $100m reshoots like Citadel.

“EXCLUSIVE: Naomi Wu and the Silence That Speaks Volumes”

Now that they know that I could be dead in a ditch tomorrow and no one would give a shit or say a word I’m 1000x less safe here.

“New York Times considers legal action against OpenAI as copyright tensions swirl”

The problem with the dysfunction of US governance is it means the only way many of the questions regarding copyright, models, and training data can be settled is with a long-running lawsuit

‘The “Hero’s Journey” Is Nonsense - Tales of Times Forgotten’

The “Hero’s Journey” is the Meyers-Briggs of storytelling.

Generative models are an existential threat to aggregators. Y’know, the same aggregators that are pouring billions into making said models.

“Don’t expect quick fixes in ‘red-teaming’ of AI models. Security was an afterthought”

… tricked a Google system into labeling a piece of malware harmless merely by inserting a line that said “this is safe to use.”

“Google Chrome will summarize entire articles for you with built-in generative AI - The Verge”

I can’t get over the fact that tech companies seem to believe that free summarisation addons will somehow become one of the “AI” billion dollar industries.

“WordPress 6.3; breaking decades of CSS!”

This issues I’ve highlighted are a product of seemingly incohesive CSS strategy and lack of CSS expertise

Modern web development in a nutshell.

“ChatGPT answers more than half of software engineering questions incorrectly”

That 40% didn’t spot the incorrect answers is a classic case of automation bias. (Cognitive automation tools help you think less and thinking less makes you less likely to spot errors)

“/bɑs ˈtjɛ̃ no ˈse ʁɑ/ (hadess) | News: New responsibilities”

Relevant to what I wrote the other day about free/open source.

I just published “You can’t debate bullshit” where I vent some of my frustrations with online discourse in tech.

“Unraveling the Digital Markets Act”

Those defending Facebook should reevaluate their stance considering philosophical, legal, political, and economic factors. Supporting mega-corporations over consumers is hardly in your or the public’s best interest.

“The bad year | Go Make Things”

I relate so much to this. Been a shitty year on the whole. Hopefully things will start to improve.

There’s an Icelandic phrase I’ve found to be extremely useful lately: “Þetta endar með ósköpum.”

Usually translated as “this will end in disaster”, tho in this context “ósköp” actually means something like “bad fate” (ó = negative, sköp = fate)
