It’s always ‘fun’ to read through the State of JS survey results each year and feel insecure about the fact that most of the stuff I use barely gets mentioned.

“Palm oil: It’s all a bit more complicated than Iceland/Greenpeace would have you think — Chocolate and Vodka”

That’s Iceland, the sleazy, evil retail corporation that should go to hell, not Iceland, the county that’s much less evil.

“A Wicked Custom Elements Alternative – Andrea Giammarchi – Medium”

Very interesting as it covers how I’ve been using custom elements lately.

“Faint Signal – blarg?”

One theory I have of why modern web development has become a bit dysfunctional:

Most of the time, a venn diagram of “tech you need to focus on to improve your career” and “tech that’ll make the product you’re working on great” is just two almost separate circles.

If the first couple of Short Treks are any indication, the next season of Star Trek Discovery should be a solid improvement.

Idle thought: the widening acceptance and use of terms like ‘problematic fav’ represents mainstream acceptance of marxist and feminist media discourse as useful lenses to analyse modern media.

Any discussion of #jolabokaflod that doesn’t mention how Icelandic is a small language with poor media representation outside of books or the 40+% decline in book unit sales over the past 8 years is just mythologising a fictional version of Iceland for marketing purposes

“How Google is slowing innovation | The JotForm Blog”

I see people are still making up bullshit about Icelandic Christmas traditions

(Icelanders don’t spend Christmas Eve reading books and Iceland, like every other fucking country in the world, has its biggest book selling period in the run up to the holidays.)

#jolabokaflod

A decade in review

So over the past decade I’ve:

  • Lived in Reykjavík, Bristol, Bath, and Montréal
  • Worked mostly on small, standalone projects
  • Blogged a lot
  • Wrote 7 awful novellas that are best forgotten
  • Took a bunch of photographs
  • Went to a bunch of conferences
  • Worked in trade publishing long enough to realise I dislike it
  • Did a podcast for a short while
  • Started to work for an OER not-for-profit

Sheesh. Not sure I know what to think about that, looking back. 😕

So replying to ActivityPub accounts from micro.blog works as advertised but at-ing them does not. 😕

Going to try and follow a few mastodon folks from my micro.blog account to see how it works.

“Scream, Scream, Scream”

A good overview of the blind spots in the Scream franchise which get more obvious as the movies grow older.
