@odd Right!
@AlanRalph Yeah, Medium is a pain in the ass. Unfortunately, even though that author also has her own website, she often forgets to crosspost articles.
@pkra This reminds me of something I heard about AWS the other day: that part of the reason for their success is that they try to avoid adding features to services as much as they can once the service is established.
Instead they prefer to roll out new features as other services that layer on top of existing ones.
The advantage to this is that existing apps don't need to chase a moving target, the services they are using are what they are.
This felt to me like a decent explanation of the benefits of the exstensible web approach and why Chrome's approach to the ext. web is kind of missing the mark: they keep piling on features onto the base platform while also iterating on the ext. web meaning web devs now have to track more moving targets than before.
@Miraz Might just be regional variations. Or a question of what sort of books you read, I guess.
@pkra Right! Like you point out with the dance example, a lot of the time it's much simpler to reach for native alternatives over complex extensions to the platform. A lot of complex notation and print-oriented graphs/illustrations are being replaced in online media by animation and video. Trying to build digital publications that are a one-to-one match to print is a good way of giving online-first media a massive headstart.
@pkra Same. Same.
@pkra That's a very good point which, now that you bring it up, also matches my experience when dealing with print people who are complaining about HTML and the web.
Also, in now that I think about it, there's a big disconnect between what Bret Victor is talking about in the talk Joe links to and what Joe is talking about.
@eli I used “native” crostini support but also tried crouton which had its own issues. The problem is that most GUI apps have been laggy, unstable (occasionally catastrophically so), and frequently look a bit blurry or out of whack on high DPI displays. Non-English keyboard layouts were severely unusable for the longest time. Keyboard entry in most GUI apps has also been laggy as hell. Multiple display support has also been painful/buggy.
And all of that on a maxed out Pixelbook. All for an OS that I think is badly designed to begin with, irrespective of the bugs. 🤷♂️
@AlanRalph Sounds like it’s going to be a busy year for you. Should be interesting 🙂
@smokey Eeek, yeah.
@kimberlyhirsh Yeah, that's a nice way of putting it. I like that.
@smokey My pleasure!
@Miraz My pleasure.
@V\_ I can't imagine trying to keep up with what's going on in web dev without feeds. Must be so much hard work.
@prologic Right. Exactly.
And that current usage part kinda omits the fact that it's still baked into pretty much all blog systems and cmses (even Medium supports it). And it's still a very popular interop solution for connecting sites to things like newsletters. It's dead in the same way that indoor plumbing is dead 😄
@smokey I think a lot of tech pundits and journos just assume that everybody uses the same tech the same way. The idea that actual use in the real world varies doesn't seem to cross their minds.
@smokey Thanks 🙂
@smokey Flying just past a streetlight.
@smokey Hah! Yeah, it looked spooky to me. 😆
@tomasino Yeah, it looks intense. Stay safe!
@odd At least everybody is well prepared at home so, fingers crossed.
Dalvík, in Icelandic at least, means 'valley cove'. Basically the name is just a description of the local geography 😆
@jack Yeah, I actually agree, even though my initial comment would seem to indicate the opposite. His blog is always a genuinely good read with interesting takes. I’ve just been burned too often by Medium’s ‘drunk driver’ style strategy pivots and swerves. 😐
@baldur Sometimes it’s because they overestimate the value of technical superiority. But most of the time it’s because they are completely mistaken about the true nature of the original problem.
@ddykstal Yeah, I'm in total agreement.
@artkavanagh Yeah, it's also a topic I've been thinking about as I really like the idea of notes/sidenotes. I don't know if I'll end up using this solution but it's useful to have as a reference.
