“The ancient fabric that no one knows how to make - BBC Future”
I’m a bit obsessed with lost tech that’s arguably superior to modern: roman concrete, true damascus steel, and now dhaka muslin.
“The Money Is In All The Wrong Places - Defector”
Nobody ever seems to believe me when I tell them that writers used to be paid quite a bit more.
“Why Is A British Baroness Drafting California Censorship Laws? - Techdirt”
This is not good.
“Exploring 12 Million of the 2.3 Billion Images Used to Train Stable Diffusion’s Image Generator”
This is informative, though it stops short of asking any really interesting questions.
Techies continue to be unable distinguish between a bundle of garbage code and a sentient mind.
A human learning from their environment and applying it to a skill they’ve trained for years is not the same as pointing software at a bunch of images and making it go “brrr”
This looks promising. I loved my alphasmart back in the day.
“Pixels of the Week – August 28, 2022 by Stéphanie Walter - UX Researcher & Designer.”
“Janet Jackson had the power to crash laptop computers - The Old New Thing”
The fact that most software developers seem to not only think that death marches are inevitable but also that excessive grind objectively results in better products reminds me that it’s probably time for a reread of The Inmates Are Running the Asylum by Alan Cooper.
“Why your website should be under 14kB in size - endtimes.dev”
“I simply don’t understand why anyone — including Mudge — thinks all this supports Musk.”
“Adactio: Journal—Work ethics”
Also, just noodling around is work as well. It creates the space necessary for new ideas and thoughts to grow.

Have an offline-first thingamabob I’m working on (so client-rendered out of necessity) and Lit, shadow DOM and all, is actually looking quite good as a tool to make reusable components for that use case.
