Really tired of micro.blog’s repeated cross-posting failures. That’s literally it’s main job and it’s not doing it. I keep putting off switching to something else but maybe now’s the time.

Occasionally I’m tempted to set up a newsletter called “Don’t Read This” that solely consists of me listing out links you shouldn’t read, with reasons why (“not a standard”, “not fully baked”, “no cross-platform support”), with estimates for when you might want to read it 😁

“Okta hack puts thousands of businesses on high alert - The Verge”

Okta owns Auth0, so quite a few of you are probably using it.

“Fyrstu heiðlóurnar komnar til landsins”

Very important news.

“That’s 6 search results for 6 screens, interrupted by an impossible amount of distractions, all of which have different design and layout for some reason.”

On the design of Google’s search results.

“His software sang the words of God. Then it went silent.”

This an amazing heartfelt story about a software application.

“Yes, the UK is trying to Brexit the Internet – Hi, I’m Heather Burns”

What Heather said.

“Why I Prefer Makefiles Over package.json Scripts for Node.js Projects”

I’ve started doing this as well. Make isn’t perfect but it’s better at this than npm is.

“Packages with high download numbers that nobody wanted to install - Stefan Judis Web Development”

This is fine. Web development is in great shape.

“Is Digital Bureaucracy Making Us Less Productive? – Paul Taylor”

“A quick take on three pretty terrifying changes to the Online Safety Bill – Hi, I’m Heather Burns”

UK legislators have been going bonkers.

“The mermaid is taking over Google search in Norway - ALEXSKRA”

This outfit seems to be taking over Icelandic language results as well.

Is it just me or have Google’s results for non-English searches declined even further? A good portion of the results in Icelandic for me are now spam blogs that have clearly been machine-translated from English.

“Why is it so hard to buy things that work well?”

Most products don’t actually work well, esp. software.

“Sooner, Not Faster: Revisited (and Intensified)”

It’s a bit funny to me how the XML ecosystem, so loathed by web devs at the time, offered a lot of what they say they want today. Namespacing, CSS scoping, and even JSX https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECMAScript_for_XML

“Make it boring”

“WebGPU — All of the cores, none of the canvas — surma.dev”

Interesting in a “read again in a couple of years when it’s more broadly supported” kinda way.
